Katrina survivor finds success

Tyren Thompson who was a Hurricane Katrina victim came into the Arbor National Emergency Grant (NEG) Dallas Youth Services program in October 2006 at 20 years old. He was an under employed high school graduate who was looking for better employment and interested in enrolling into an occupational skills training program.

Tyren attended the Arbor Project CEO youth model where he explored career interests, was provided business skills training, learned how to prepare his resume and participated in mock interviews. He was given a gift card for clothing and was provided gas cards for transportation.

After attending the CEO class he found he was interested in HVAC. Tyren transferred into the Arbor WIA OSY Youth Services program where an individual training account was provided so he could attend an occupational skills training to get his certificate in HVAC.

Tyren was given a voucher for a free home computer provided by the NEG grant. During his occupation skills training, he was provided with gas card incentives as long as he was participating in class.

In October 2007, Tyren received his certificate in HVAC and secured a job with Magnolia Hotel starting at $11.00 per hour in the maintenance department.

He will be in follow up services for one year where a Career Specialist will keep in contact with him and provide services as needed.

Tyren said "I am very grateful I was able to further my education and secure a better job".
